How to reach Sikkim

Different mode of transport available to reach Sikkim. This heavenly destination is well connected by airways, railways and roadways. In spite of its mountainous terrain, comfortable surface transport available here to tour around the region.

Airways

Located 35km south of capital town Gangtok, at an altitude of 4,500 feet, Pakyong Airport is Sikkim’s only airport, in a picturesque setting. The Pakyong Airport also has the honour of being among the highest airports of the country.

Apart from Pakyong Airport, Bagdogra Airport of West Bengal is the other nearest airport for travel to Sikkim. Well connected with flights from different parts of the country, Bagdogra Airport is 125km, about 5-hour drive from Gangtok. Bagdogra is also connected with Gangtok by daily helicopter service operated by Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation and it takes only 20 minutes to reach Gangtok from Bagdogra. Though, this helicopter service is subjected to the weather conditions.

Railways

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and Siliguri in West Bengal are the two rail stations nearest to Sikkim. NJP is 125 Km and Siliguri is 114 Kms from Gangtok and are well connected to all the major cities.

Roadways

National Highway 31A, the lifeline of Sikkim connects Gangtok with Siliguri and this picturesque highway runs through the lush forests along the bank of Teesta river on one side and high-rise mountain ranges of Eastern Himalaya on other side.
