Dooars or Duars

Description

Dooars or Duars are the floodplains and foothills of the eastern Himalayas in North-East India around Bhutan. Duar means door in Nepali and Bengali languages, and the region forms the gateway to Bhutan from India. The Western Dooars is known as the Bengal Dooars and the Eastern Dooars as the Assam Dooars. The Dooars valley (also called Duars) stretching from River Teesta on the west to River Sankosh on the east, an area coving roughly 130 km by 40 km, the Dooars forms major part of the Jalpaiguri district.

    Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary

    Situated in the Eastern foothills of the Himalayas, the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary along with Gorumara National Park is famous for one horned rhinoceros. The park is also the breeding ground for reptiles like the Indian python, fresh-water turtles, geckos, monitor lizards and kraits. Elephant safaris & Jeep safaris can be arranged for wildlife experience.

    Gorumara National Park

    Gorumara National Park is situated just at the foothills of Eastern Himalaya in Terai region on the banks of river Murti. Some of the wildlife that can be seen here are Elephants, leopards and barking sambar deers. The park is also home to Reptiles and amphibians like the Indian python, several species of birds, snakes etc.   

    Other noteworthy places to visit in Dooars are Lataguri, Totopara, Chilapata Forest, Buxa Tiger Reserve, Alipurduar, Samsing, Suntalekhola, Neora Valley National Park, Murti riverside, Mahananda Sanctuary, Bindu village and vast stretch of teagardens
